Student Success Handbook

A helpful guide for new students navigating DU.

Things Students Should Know

Incomplete

If you have an unusual circumstance that has affected your ability to participate in class, please discuss an incomplete grade with your instructor!   It will not affect your GPA, and you will have an extra 30 days to finish your required work.

For additional requirements and information, please check out the Incomplete Request page.

Withdrawal

Official notice of all withdrawals, failure to attend, or schedule changes (including no attendance in any class(es)), must be made in writing or in-person to Advising. If you do not submit formal schedule changes, withdrawals, etc. in person or in writing to your advisor, you will be fully charged and not eligible for any tuition refund.

APA 7th Edition Style

Davenport University uses the Publication Manual of American Psychological Association(APA) as the style for referencing and citing all academic writing and research and formatting papers.

Blackboard Learn

Davenport’s learning management system is Blackboard. It is a virtual learning environment that integrates course information and course management. Its main purposes are to add online elements to courses traditionally delivered face-to-face and to develop completely online courses with few or no face-to-face meetings.

Instructors at DU are required to have their syllabus and grade book posted on Bb.

Blackboard Collaborate

Blackboard Collaborate is a real-time video conferencing tool that lets you interact with other students and the instructor. Collaborate opens right in your browser, so you don't have to install any additional software to join a session. Real-Time Virtual (RTV) courses are often taught through Collaborate.

Commencement

Our graduation ceremony is held at the end of the winter semester each year, celebrating students' successful academic journey.

Graduating students must fill out a graduation application in order for their names to be printed in the commencement program.

Convocation

Serves as an official academic welcome to Davenport University.

  • It is an introduction to Academic Leadership, Colleges, and Faculty.
  • Allows first-year students to meet and connect with one another.
  • Held during the first week of school each fall at the W.A. Lettinga Campus.

Dean's List & President's List

Each semester Davenport University recognizes undergraduate students who have achieved academic excellence... Inclusion on either of these Lists President’s List or Dean’s List is noted on the official transcript and a congratulatory notification is sent.

Dean’s List: Students who receive a 3.50 – 3.79 semester GPA are eligible if they meet the following conditions.

  • The student earned six (6) or more credits for the semester and

  • The six credits were earned for courses that were used in calculating the semester GPA.

President’s List: Students who receive a 3.80 or above semester GPA are eligible if they meet the following conditions.

  • The student earned six (6) or more credits for the semester and

  • The six credits were earned for courses that were used in calculating the semester GPA.

Plagiarism

The act of taking someone else’s work or ideas and passing them off as your own work is considered to be plagiarism. As Davenport uses APA 7th edition formatting, it is important to cite or quote the author when writing a paper or other writing assignments for a class.

We use Blackboard as our learning management system and for most writing assignments, professors will have students turn their assignments into a tool to make sure students are not using any plagiarism in their work. There are consequences if this action is made by your professor or even through Davenport University.

Probation - Academics

Colleges have specific criteria for student enrollment, for example, minimum GPA requirements and credit hour requirements. If students do not meet this criterion, they will be put on academic probation.

This period of time is when students will receive a warning or a wake-up call to improve their grades and use their resources to positively impact their minimum requirements. You will want to speak to your advisor about what steps to take to get out of this probationary period.

Student Code of Conduct/Academic Integrity

All members of an academic community shall be confident that each person's work has been responsibly and honorably acquired, developed, and presented. The work that a student submits shall be a fair representation of his or her ability, knowledge, and skill.

The University expects students to respect and exhibit these principles as they form the basis of the quality of the institution and the quality of Davenport's graduates. As stated in the Student Code of Conduct, the University may discipline a student for academic dishonesty.

Academic dishonesty is defined as any activity that tends to undermine the academic integrity of the institution and includes but is not limited to the following: Cheating, Fabrication, Facilitating Academic Dishonesty, Interference, Plagiarism, Violation of Course Rules. Simply put... JUST DON’T CHEAT.

Textbooks

For classes held on the W. A. Lettinga campus some textbooks are available at the Tyrus R. Wessell Bookstore. But not all books for all classes are on the shelves. If you are taking online classes or attending classes at another campus, the books you need will be available at the Online Bookstore

Transcripts

A transcript is the official record of your academic history that includes all the classes you are in, credit hours, and your major(s). In addition, it lists your academic information, like what time and where your classes are being held at.

To look at your unofficial transcript, it is located on the student connections page under “Academic Resources”.
