Student Success Handbook

A helpful guide for new students navigating DU.

Getting Started Right

ACES 100 Course

In Davenport’s curriculum, ACES (Achieving Career and Education Success), is a 100-level course that is required for all college freshmen to complete.

  • This course helps students evaluate their interests and abilities to guide them in developing what career goals they have.
  • In addition, students are introduced to important dynamics of interpersonal communication and conflict resolution that are necessary for real-life decision-making.

Academic Calendar

The Academic Calendar provides information and dates specific to each of the three Davenport semesters:

  • Fall
  • Winter
  • Spring/Summer

Information includes start and end dates, breaks and holiday dates, book voucher dates, and other semester-specific information.

Orientation

After you accept the offer to attend Davenport University, the next step would be the orientation.

Orientation is a way for you to familiarize yourself with DU resources and policies that will provide you with the tools to begin your educational journey at the university. It is a way to prepare for transitioning from a high school student to a college student.

Panthermail

The student email service powered by Google. You must use your Panthermail to correspond with your instructors/professors.

Professor

In college, your “teacher” is referred to as an instructor or professor depending on their years of experience and ranking. They will express how they wished to be addressed. A good rule is to check out how they sign their emails to you and then address them accordingly.

Semester

An academic term of the school year when classes are being held at an institution is considered to be a semester. There are generally two semesters in a school year, the fall semester and the winter semester.

At DU:

  • The fall semester usually begins in September and ends in December.
  • The winter semester begins in January and ends in April.
  • We also offer a spring/summer term for students who want to take summer courses.

Student ID Number (A001…)

Every student who enrolls at Davenport University will get a student ID number. All students will receive an identification card with their name, ID number, and a photo of themselves on it. This number is used for financial documentation purposes as well as the security and safety of the students. On campus, you will use your card to get into the dorms, buildings, and dining hall.

Student/Office Hours

Student/Office hours are times when you can meet with your instructor to discuss material that is presented in the class or if you have any concerns or interests that are related to the course.

Your instructor will usually post in the syllabus or tell you in class when they are available for student/office hours.

Syllabus

A syllabus is a guide to the course you are taking and says what is expected of you in the course. It normally includes instructor information, policies, rules and regulations, rubrics, scheduled assignments, and points of assignments and tests.

You will find the syllabus in Blackboard, Davenport’s course-management system, in your course listing.
