DU Library Style Guide

Page Style

Don't change the font, color, or general styles on your pages beyond what is spelled out here.

Formatting Text

  • Headings (<h3>, <h4>, <h5>, <h6>) should be used in descending order according to level of importance (<h3> = most important, and should be used 1st; <h6> = least important, and should be used last [if at all]). This gives proper outline hierarchy in our pages, making our presentation accessible and readable by browsers and screen readers.

Though <h1> and <h2> take highest precedence on web pages, they are set by default on all libguides; therefore any headings you add should begin with <h3> to maintain descending order with the <h1> and <h2>'s already "baked in".

  • Bold text or italics are preferred for emphasizing text (if unsure which to choose, opt for bold text because it is more readable). But emphasis works best when used sparingly (see How to emphasize key words in your text).
  • Don't:
    • underline text that is not a link
    • style your headings (with bold, italics, etc.)
    • end headings with colon or period
    • change the font-size
    • use images in place of text

Colors

If adding color to your guides, use only the following color combinations:
