Table of Contents

APA does not specifically state how to format your table of contents (TOC).

But here are some general guidelines:

  • Use 1" margins on all sides
  • Retain the same font used throughout your paper
  • Add any special requirements your instructor requires
  • Continue regular page numeration for Table of Contents
  • For each new "level" of heading, indent an additional (equal) indentation from where the last level was indented

Creating a Table of Contents in Word

Two ways to generate a table of contents in Word:

  • Manually: On the References tab, you can click the Table of Contents button. Clicking Manual Table will insert a table of content you can then fill out as needed.
  • Automatic Table: Simply click one of the automatic tables and Word will automatically populate a table with section titles and page numbers. Note that for this to work you must use a header style to indicate any section you wish to appear in the table of contents. If your chapter titles move or your page numbers change, click on the table and select Update Table to correct these.

You can use Microsoft's Format or Customize a Table of Contents to learn how to set this up in Microsoft Word.
