Basic Gardening Starting Points

Soil Composition

Knowing the Soil Composition of your particular garden will be incredibly helpful for creating a successful and sustainable garden.

This information will help you know:

  • Which plants will thrive in your soil
  • If you need to amend or add things to your soil in order for your garden to be successful
  • Provides information about how often you need to water your garden

Seeds vs Plants

Seeds and Plants each have pros and cons for adding them to your garden. Some things to think about would be:

  • Cost - seeds are usually cheaper
  • Time commitment - seeds require more time to mature
  • Growing season - how long your growing season will tell you if you have enough time for seeds to fully mature or if more hardy plants are more useful
  • Success rate - mature plants have a higher success rate than seeds, which can have lower success rates or even be necessary to thin or remove some, depending on how closely you sow the seeds.

No matter which you choose, seeds or plants, make sure to pay attention to the details that are usually found on the back of the seed packet or the card that is in a plant pot. These cards will usually tell you:

  • Depth to plant
  • Sun needs
  • Spacing between plants
  • Fertilization needs
  • Length of time to reach maturity or flowering times
