Women's Suffrage: Celebrating 100 Years

Nineteenth Amendment

The 19th Amendment was proposed and passed by Congress on June 4, 1919, but there were more hurdles to overcome.  Three-fourths of the states (36 of the 48 existing states at that time) needed to ratify the amendment for it to be enacted.  On August 18, 1920, Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the amendment, guaranteeing women the right to vote.  Decades of struggle preceded this passage.
