The Summer Olympics in Tokyo is set to begin with the opening ceremony on July 23rd, 2021, and will last 19 days. Comprising of 33 sports, 32 International Federations, 339 medal events, 42 competition venues, and 11,090 athletes.
The motto of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 is, "Discover Tomorrow".
The 3 R's of Tokyo 2020
The Olympics have come a long way from Ancient Greece. Click on each heading below to find information and resources on these three "R's" headed to the 2020 Summer Games.
- RecyclingUnder the Tokyo 2020 Medal Project, Japanese citizens were encouraged to turn in their used cell phones and other small electronics. The recycled products will be turned into 5,000 gold, silver and bronze Olympic and Paralympic medals.
- Rock ClimbingOne of four new sports debuting in Tokyo. Don't blink: The winning "speed climbing" time (one of three disciplines contested) should be 5 to 6 seconds.
- RefugeesDisplaced athletes will have a chance to compete in Tokyo as part of the Refugee Olympic Team. It's a second and bigger version of a concept first launched at the 2016 Summer Games in Rio (seen above marching in the Opening Ceremony in a unhcr.org photo), that now will include year round support for athletes. There was no refugee squad at the 2018 Winter Olympics.
